- Experience Gunlom with its picturesque rock pools above the falls.
- Hike in the remote wilderness of Jarrangbarnmi, that is a restricted access area and can be entered by special permit or licence only.
- Experience spectacular rocky cliffs and escarpments, cascades, deep rock pools and white sandy beaches.
- Marvel at the diverse endemic flora and fauna restricted to the Arnhemland escarpment.
- Learn about local Jawoyn culture and the significance of this remote area.
Parts of Jarrangbarnmi lie within ‘Sickness Country’ (Buladjang country). Bula, a powerful spirit, formed this landscape and then went to live underground. Jawoyn (local Aboriginal people) are very respectful when visiting this gorge.
They ask visitors to also respect these important sites while visiting Buladjang country.
Jarrangbarnmi is a culturally sensitive area and visitor numbers are strictly limited: Only 40 people are allowed to gain access to this magnificent site at any one time, no exceptions!
Licences to regularly access this restricted area are available to a small number of high standard tourism operations only. Top End Explorer Tours have secured a licence to access Jarrangbarnmi on Mondays and Thursdays each week from June (the exact opening date is subject to seasonal conditions) through to the end of the dry season.
The health and safety of our passengers is our highest priority!
Please note that the activity level of this tour is very high as it involves hiking in remote and difficult terrain.
A high level of fitness and agility is required. This tour is not suitable for families with children under 8 years of age!
Tours to Gunlom and Jarrangbarnmi depart from Jabriu and Cooinda twice a week only, on Mondays and Thursdays.
We travel with a minimum of two (2) and a maximum of seven (7) passengers.
Access depends on seasonal conditions. As estuarine crocodiles regularly move into the lower pools of the gorge during the wet season, crocodile surveys need to be conducted by park rangers in the early dry season (usually complete by around June/July).
Tours booked for June may be waitlisted (not confirmed) until given the go-ahead by park managers.
Your guide will collect you from your accommodation:
- Township of Jabiru at 06:45
- Kakadu Lodge Cooinda (Home of Yellow Waters) at 07:30.
Return to your accommodation is from approximately 17:30.
We reserve the right to cancel all tours due to hot weather conditions.
The mean maximum temperature for Jabiru in September is 37.2 deg. In the sandstone gorges of the Arnhemland escarpment shade is sparse and temperatures often reach 45 degrees and above. We don’t recommend visiting the area beyond September when conditions become progressively inhospitable as Gurrung (hot weather time) is giving way to Gunumeleng (build-up season).
Please take the time to read our terms and conditions!
